Tour & Giveaway: 119. Ravens by George Dawes Green...

July 23, 2009
Today's tour is for Ravens by George Dawes Green...

About the book:
The Boatwrights just won 318 million dollars in the Georgia State lottery. It's going to be the worst day of their lives.

When Shaw McBride and Romeo Zderko pull up at a convenience store off I-95 in Georgia, their only thought is to fix a leaky tire and be on their way again to Florida-away from their dull Ohio tech-support jobs. But this happens to be the store from which a 318,000,000 million dollar Jackpot ticket has just been sold -- and when a pretty clerk accidentally reveals to Shaw the identity of the winning family, he hatches a ferociously audacious scheme: He and Romeo will squeeze the family for half their prize.

That night, he visits the Boatwright home and takes the family hostage, while Romeo patrols the streets nearby, prepared to murder the Boatwrights' loved ones at any sign of resistance. At first, the family offers none. But Shaw's plot depends on maintaining constant fear-merciless, unfaltering terror-and soon, under the pressure, everyone's sanity begins to unravel . . .

At once frightening, comic, and suspenseful, RAVENS is a wholly original and utterly compelling novel from one of our most talented writers.

About the author:
George Dawes Green is a highly acclaimed novelist and poet. He currently divides his time between Georgia and New York. He can be found online at his website, georgedawesgreen.com, and Facebook has a fan group for Ravens.

drey's thoughts:
"Comic" and "suspenseful"--that Ravens definitely is... But first, the cast of characters... The Boatwrights are a completely dysfunctional family. Mom's a blistering alcoholic. Dad's so timid he'd go turtle on you. The daughter is fed up with trying to deal with her family, and is dreaming of anything else but this. And her little brother is mama's baby and absolutely content to keep it that way.

Into this play comes Romeo and Shaw. Two drifters on their way to Florida. Shaw is the thinker, the mastermind; Romeo is the follower. Stopping over in a Georgia gas station, Shaw learns that the Boatwrights have won 318 million dollars. And he hatches a plan to steal it. Well, actually, only half. And off we go. I thought Shaw's plan was brilliant. And the thought that anyone can find out that much information about you online, completely scary.

Ravens is gripping in its portrayal of the lengths to which some will go to, for money. You'll want to read this roller-coaster of a book all the way through, to see how it ends. I loved it.

Check out the Ravens excerpt!

The only lottery I've ever one is some blog giveaways. Unfortunately, all the books in the world aren't going to pay off our debt and let me travel for a living instead of work...

Same for me, book giveaways and a couple other random contests are the closest things to lottery I've ever come across. (Of course, that doesn't keep my stepdad from trying.)

No lottery wins for me. I've been doing pretty well on the book blogs lately. I love winning books.

I subscribe by googlereader.

On the rare occasion I try to win, I always have the sneaking suspicion that I would be better off taking the dollar and getting quarters for it. Then I could drop the quarters on the sidewalk and enjoy the pleasure of a little kid when they find it. At least I'd get something out of my dollar then!

I'd love to win this book! I'm regretting passing on the blog tour, but I was just too backed up!

I already follow, does that count?

I don't play the lottery. I probably should, seeing as I have fairly good luck with a few book drawings. If I ever won a huge sum of money. I would be on a never ending road trip on all the backroads in the country. Driving by day, writing by night.

I'm huge fan of anything Raven and this cover just sucks me in. The story line dosn't sound too shabby either (winks). Please enter me for this drawing. Thanks! Indigo

I haven't won the lottery yet, but I am pretty lucky with the book giveaways. Last summer a funny thing happened-I was at a benefit and put my name in for a set of patio furntiture. After the benefit we went home and my husband was finishing building our deck. As he was nailing in the final board I got a phone call telling me I won the furniture! lol

The most I've ever one is off a scratch ticket for a hundred bucks. Believe you me I was quite surprised. I have also won several book contests that has my TBR pile overflowing. I so appreciate all the authors who give us the opportunity to win their work and publishing companies as well. Thank you.

The most I've won in a lottery is $150.00 from a scratch off ticket. Lately, we've been winning Powerball a lot, by matching the Powerball number, for a staggering $3.00! Oh well, it covers the cost of buying tickets. :)

Thanks for a chance to win "Ravens!" I already have it on my list of must reads.

Funny thing is, I don't buy lotto tickets often, maybe a few times a year. I was just in the right place at the right time.

I don't buy lottery tickets. I feel it's money down the drain. It's sad to see senior citizens and welfare recipients put down their last few dollars to buy a dream they can't afford. Lotteries serve a purpose in raising revenue for the states but at what cost? It's a personal choice and it's not for me.
