drey's thoughts:
Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones is the story of fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon in heaven, watching over her family and friends on earth as they deal with her disappearance and subsequent presumed death. It is a heartbreaking story of devastating loss and eventual healing.
This is an emotional read, and Alice Sebold does a masterful job at deftly tugging yours along. I was immersed in the Salmon family's falling apart as they try to negotiate this reality that they so don't want. And I felt Susie's calm as she's navigating Heaven and learning to let go.
The characters are real. The plot is simple. And the storytelling superb. I'm going to add the movie to my Netflix queue now.
drey's rating: Excellent, even if I didn't like the lack of a final resolution.
This is one of those books I've never gotten around to reading either. Glad you finally tried it out!
ReplyDeleteThere are soooooooo many books out there, I am embarrassed to admit how many are on my shelves that are unread... And not just the ones for review, either. I can't seem to stop buying more! :(
ReplyDeleteDitto!
ReplyDeleteLoved the movie - how shallow am I not to have known there was a book first :) LOL Thanks for sharing today.
ReplyDelete:) I haven't seen the movie, and honestly I didn't know there was one...
ReplyDeleteI just recently read this and think I was too traumatized to ever watch the movie. Maybe in time...
ReplyDeleteWow, Shelley... Have you read Living Dead Girl? I think if they ever made that into a movie (hope they haven't already!) I'll be telling everyone to go watch it, but I might not myself...
