Book Giveaway Carnival ~ Win drey's "Culture" pack!!

March 1, 2009
*** THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED! ***
Bookroom Reviews

Tracy over at bookroomreviews.com is hosting a Book Giveaway Carnival, from March 2nd to 8th... I'm so thrilled to participate, & I hope you like what's in my "culture" pack. I am Asian (if you haven't guessed from my profile picture, lol!), and am still discovering Asian authors, in between reading all the fantasy tomes that are in my collection. Here are three books that are varied in setting, topic, and storytelling style. Enjoy!

Waiting, by Ha Jin

"In Waiting, Ha Jin portrays the life of Lin Kong, a dedicated doctor torn by his love for two women: one who belongs to the New China of the Cultural Revolution, the other to the ancient traditions of his family's village. Ha Jin profoundly understands the conflict between the individual and society, between the timeless universality of the human heart and constantly shifting politics of the moment. With wisdom, restraint, and empathy for all his characters, he vividly reveals the complexities and subtleties of a world and a people we desperately need to know."--Judges' Citation, National Book Award

Out, by Natsuo Kirino

This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her coworkers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plot’s ringleader, but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society.

At once a masterpiece of literary suspense and pitch-black comedy of gender warfare, Out is also a moving evocation of the pressures and prejudices that drive women to extreme deeds, and the friendships that bolster them in the aftermath.

The Tapestries, by Kien Nguyen

This epic tale of romance and revenge - widely acclaimed for its suspense, emotional complexity, colorful settings, and storytelling brio - immerses us in the world of Dan Nguyen, a spirited young boy in turn-of-the-century Vietnam. After being thrust into an arranged marriage at age seven, Dan secretly witnesses his father's beheading, escapes certain death by being sold into servitude, and ultimately is forced to choose between passion and family honor when he falls in love with the one woman he can never have.

The details:

ONE lucky entrant will win all three books, which will be shipped media mail as soon as I find a box to put 'em in!

This giveaway will run till 5:00pm on March 8th, and is open to US & Canada residents only.

How do you enter, you ask? Well, let me tell you all the ways!

For one entry, tell me who a favorite Asian author is, if you have one. And recommend a book of theirs (to add to my collection, of course!).

For another entry, follow my blog, or let me know you're already a follower (I heart my followers!).

For two more entries, blog about this giveaway. Let me know where. =)

For even more entries, check out my review posts from the month of February, and let me know which ones you thought were good, or which ones needed more. One entry for each post you refer to (whether good or not-so).

And don't forget to come back & find out if you've won. Winners will have 3 days to get me their mailing info, after which I'll draw a replacement. If I have an email address, I can follow up if I don't hear from you, but if not...

Good luck!!

Hmm the only Asian author that comes to mind is David Suzuki and he's a non fiction writer.

He is a mind before his time.

I'm not sure who my favorite Asian author is. I don't do a lot of research into the authors I enjoy and I'm not sure of their heritage. I'd just be guessing based on last name and that seems like a bad idea.
But I'd still like to win these books.

I can't claim to have a favorite Asian author - not because I haven't read any, but because I don't remember their names. I pass my books along to the library for their annual sale so I don't even have any here to check. My favorite books by Asian authors are usually at least semi-biographical and deal with the lives of women in pre WWII Asia. asthenight at gmail dot com

Jade Lee is definitely a great asian author. Her romances are pretty steamy and filled with Chinese culture (well historically speaking). I'd definitely recommend her first book in the Tigress series White Tigress.

Please enter me in this giveaway. Natsuo Kirino is actually my favourite Asian author. I heard that What Remains is out Stateside, but can't find it anywhere. Other than that, I've read all of her english novels, but I don't own a single copy. Since you know about her already, another Asian book that you might like is I Have the Right to Destroy Myself by Young-ha Kim. It's a South Korean novel and if you haven't read it, definitely check it out. It's fairly short, but a very interesting read nonetheless.

I've also left a link of your giveaway at my blog, it's off to the side under the header, Giveaway List.

I adore The Tale of Genji and think that she is an amazing author considering the time that the book was written and the fact that it still hold relevance in the modern world.

I am in the process of learning Japanese and plan to study abroad in Japan sometime soon, so I am really interested in learning about more modern Asian authors.
