before i go to sleepAbout the book:
S. J. Watson makes his powerful debut with this compelling, fast-paced psychological thriller, reminiscent of Shutter Island and Memento, in which an amnesiac who, following a mysterious accident, cannot remember her past or form new memories, desperately tries to uncover the truth about who she is—and who she can trust.

Every morning, Christine awakens beside a stranger in an unfamiliar bed. She sees a middle-aged face in the bathroom mirror that she does not recognize. And every morning, the man patiently explains that he is Ben, her husband, that she is forty-seven-years-old, and that an accident long ago damaged her ability to remember.

In place of memories Christine has a handful of pictures, a whiteboard in the kitchen, and a journal, hidden in a closet. She knows about the journal because Dr. Ed Nash, a neurologist who claims to be treating her without Ben’s knowledge, reminds her about it each day. Inside its pages, the damaged woman has begun meticulously recording her daily events—sessions with Dr. Nash, snippets of information that Ben shares, flashes of her former self that briefly, miraculously appear.

But as the pages accumulate, inconsistencies begin to emerge, raising disturbing questions that Christine is determined to find answers to. And the more she pieces together the shards of her broken life, the closer she gets to the truth... and the more terrifying and deadly it is.

drey's thoughts:
Wow. Just wow. I cannot believe that Before I Go to Sleep is a debut.  This page-turner will have you mesmerized until you flip over the very last page...  Christine Lucas wakes up every morning not knowing where she is, or even who she is.  No matter what she learns during that day, she'll forget it as she sleeps.  So every morning is a discovery, and she goes through this routine over and over and over...

When the doctor she begins to see suggests that she keep a journal to chronicle her daily "discoveries," Christine does so.  And begins to wonder why Ben is lying to her--is he truly lying, or is he keeping things from her so she doesn't have to re-experience the pain every day? And does she truly trust him?

Before I Go to Sleep has a tightly woven plot with a sympathetic character, and will keep you guessing, even as Christine keeps guessing. You feel her confusion, and self-placating certainty, as she travels that valley between sanity and chaos. And the twist at the end will have you holding your breath till you get through it.

drey's rating: Outstanding! Definitely needs to be one of your summer reads if you love thrillers!

Review: 82. Demons Prefer Blondes by Sidney Ayers...

June 28, 2011
Today's review is for the first in a new series from Sidney Ayers...

Title: Demons Prefer Blondes (Demons Unleashed #1)
Author: Sidney Ayers
ISBN-13: 9781402251740
ARC: 392 pages
Publisher: Sourcebooks, Inc., 2011
Purchase at IndieBound, Amazon, The Book Depository
Source: Sourcebooks

drey's thoughts:
Demons Prefer Blondes is a paranormal romance that is quirky and funny. The heroine is a newly-aware succubus who happens to be succubi royalty. The hero is a tortured demon who cannot believe he’s being sent to Earth to retrieve an antique chest. And once Lucy and Rafe meet, all Hell breaks loose. Literally. So what else is there to do but fight?

On the bad side: A big bad demon who’s intent on getting his hands on an antique chest that Lucy’s bff bought from an antique store. He wouldn’t mind getting his hands on Lucy, too, especially once he finds out who her father is. Oh, and he has Rafe’s sister in his thrall.

On the good side: Rafe. His posse: BFF Nic, clean-up maestro Kalli, talking ape-imp Squeaky, Lucy’s guardian angel, and her salon employee-slash-friend Frankie.
Who do you think wins? Why, love of course. After all, this is a romance novel. And in the helter-skelter from the first page to the last is a ton of humor.

With all that said, I do wish I liked this book more than I do. It was an ok read for me--there was so much chaos from so many characters, so nobody really stood out--not even Rafe and Lucy. And their story seemed a bit rushed into, and yet they’re pledging undying love and all that jazz. But still, it’s a fun romp, so give it a whirl if paranormal romance is your thing.

Review: 81. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold...

June 27, 2011
I've been meaning to pick this title up for a while now, and finally got around to reading my 2-year-old copy...

Title: The Lovely Bones
Author: Alice Sebold
ISBN-13: 9780316044400
eBook
Publisher: Little, Brown, & Co., 2009

drey's thoughts:
Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones is the story of fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon in heaven, watching over her family and friends on earth as they deal with her disappearance and subsequent presumed death. It is a heartbreaking story of devastating loss and eventual healing.

This is an emotional read, and Alice Sebold does a masterful job at deftly tugging yours along. I was immersed in the Salmon family's falling apart as they try to negotiate this reality that they so don't want. And I felt Susie's calm as she's navigating Heaven and learning to let go.

The characters are real. The plot is simple. And the storytelling superb. I'm going to add the movie to my Netflix queue now.

drey's rating: Excellent, even if I didn't like the lack of a final resolution.

Scene of the Blog is a weekly feature on Kittling: Books that spotlights the creative spaces of book bloggers around the world. Originally limited to photographs showing desks, kitchen countertops and the occasional comfy chair, this feature has blossomed into showing sidewalk cafes, converted garage spaces, bookshelves and pets.

Head on over and see my messy spaces!  (And my apologies again to Cathy for forgetting to post about this...)
