It's been a while since I've read an Alex Cross novel, so I was excited to see this one gracing my mailbox. And it's definitely your typical Alex Cross novel. Damsel in distress? Check. Seriously disturbed loon killing people? Check. Detective ticking people off by talking to people he "shouldn't" be? Check.
It's sad that the damsel in distress isn't really in distress anymore, and that she's his estranged niece. But I thought that there wasn't quite enough emotional drama that plays out as a result, and what it did have didn't really resonate with me. This one read like just-another-crime-novel, instead of a crime novel where the main character goes a little nuts, because hey, it's his niece.
Not to say it's not a good crime novel--this is Patterson's work after all, and the dude knows his crime novel formula like the back of his hand. Could it have been better? Sure. See the above paragraph. And I guessed whodunit wayyyyyy before we got to the end. Of course, I was right. =)
Cross fans will like this one, because it's a Cross novel. Patterson fans will like this one because, well, they're fans. But if you're a fan of more than just another cookie-cutter novel, pick up something else. Like maybe Sheldon Rusch's books.
