Review & Giveaway: 189. Tell Me Something True by Leila Cobo...

October 26, 2009
About the book:
Gabriella Richards feels betrayed. Between her doting father in Hollywood and her grandmother's aristocratic family in Cali, Columbia, a few facts have been carefully hidden about her mother, whose tragic death shattered a picture-perfect marriage. Gabriella, now a classical pianist, has kept one foot in her grandmother's elegant, guarded world, visiting her every year. But this trip changes everything. In a dusty closet in a faded mansion, Gabriella finds her mother's diary, written just for her. And at a party of Cali's young and hip, she meets a man she can't resist. Soon, between her mother's shocking confessions and her new lover's secretive life, Gabriella will enter a season of pleasure, pain, and awakening--as she discovers that things are not always true or false, and that the words that matter most can be the most dangerous ones of all...

drey's thoughts:
Gabriella is one of those young women who're floating through life. Her father is nagging her to make a plan for her future, to realize her potential as a pianist. But Gabriella isn't sure that's what she wants to do. And as she makes her annual pilgrimage to visit her grandmother, she promises that she'll try.

Tell Me Something True is a warm, poignant story about a daughter who finds out that her mother was not all that she thought she was. Alternating between Gabriella's and Helena's point of view, the story slowly unravels Helena's secrets, as written to Gabriella in a diary. And Gabriella has to come to grips with that version of her mother.

On the same trip, Gabriella meets and falls in love with a very not-appropriate-for-polite-company (according to her grandmother and cousin), handsome, Angel. But she follows her heart anyway. And in doing so, eventually learns that the differing version of her mother may not have been all that bad; and eventually learns that some mistakes can never be remedied.

Hmmm...I don't currently keep a diary. I spend all my time writing about books! I do have tons of journals dating back to elementary school, and I keep a journal in which I write down my favorite passages from books.

I've never kept a diary except for
a short while when I was in college. For me, deep dark secrets
would never appear in a diary-they
wouldn't be secret then.

I have kept diaries sporadically over the years and sometimes enjoy re-reading them.

I go through periods of "confession" but mostly write conscious that someone else (my grandkids?) will be reading it in the future. The vanity!

I have never kept a diary even though I enjoy reading the ones that my grandma and grandpa wrote. There were six kids in my family and it was rare that a secret could be kept. I would have been afraid that one of my brothers would have found it and read it aloud at dinnertime.

Thank you,

Christine

I kept a diary as a teenager, but for some reason teenage-me had a crush on a boy who treated me badly. Go figure.

So every page ended up with some mention of him on it, and when I turned thirty, I reread the diary, said "What was I thinking?" and disposed of the diary.

I used to keep a diary when I was in junior high, and then I went back and read it in high school and couldn't believe how silly it was, so I threw it away. Started another one later in high school, read it in college, though it was silly and threw it away. :)

Then in college my parents let me borrow the old diary of my great-aunt. She kept it over the course of four years when she was in her thirties. It was absolutely fascinating (if somewhat sad - most of her entries started out "got drunk last night"). I learned so much about her though that I never knew when she was alive.

So at that point I started my own journal and only kept up with it for about five years, writing entries every month or two. I haven't looked at it in about four years. Hopefully when I look at it I won't think it's silly and throw it away. ;)

I follow your blog.
