Saturday Spotlight: Crave by J.R. Ward...

So, Chloe Neill got me started on J.R. Ward's In Death series... Which I sooooo should get back to, because I have a lot to catch up on! But I saw the cover for Ward's new Fallen Angels series, and am definitely going to pick this up!

Saturday Spotlight: Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick...

I, like a lot of YA fans out there who loved Becca Fitzpatrick's Hush, Hush, am totally excited that the sequel, Crescendo, is in stores October 19th. Are you picking this up?

Nora should have known her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described as anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy, Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.

The further Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim bloodline has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

I used to be a huge Ken Follett fan. I think I got hooked when I read On Wings of Eagles and then Lie Down with Lions, and I made my way through every single Follett book published in the 80's and early 90's. Then, there was a looooooooooong drought, until recently when the Mr. and I found Starz's production of The Pillars of the Earth. And I remembered that I loved Ken Follett's storytelling... So. Today's spotlight is on his newly-released first of a trilogy, Fall of Giants. I'm hoping it's as good as I want it to be!

I picked I Shall Wear Midnight for today's spotlight because I love Terry Pratchett, and am completely in awe of his skill in weaving together worlds chock-full of interesting characters. And because the cover's cool. And last, but not least, definitely because Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series was the first thing that came up when one of my other favorite authors (Patrick Rothfuss!) was asked to recommend YA books. Today's spotlight is book #6 of one of my favorite series. It's on its way to my house, and I will probably drop everything to read it at least once (or twice) next week!

Saturday Spotlight: West of Mars!

Today's spotlight is a little different from the others so far... Instead of showering attention on a book, we're going to highlight a friend (to me and to other bloggers!!) and her website!

Susan is an author (see my January Featured Author posts), blogger, and general all-round fun person. Her official author blog is at The Meet and Greet (see tabs on her website), where she ruminates about writing, and shares lil' stories with us. Rocks 'n Reads is where she reviews books, and Win a Book is where most other bloggers knows Susan best--it's where she shares what's going on in our world, selfless wonder that she is...

So, why spotlight Susan today? Because we were corresponding, and she pointed out that while I have 527 gajillion followers (which I'm pretty darn sure is a total exaggeration!), she only has 87. And that made my eyes pop out. Like, what? How?

And I thought I'd try to remedy that. One reason for the out-of-whack numbers is Susan's GFC (Google Friend Connect) widget is on her main blog, The Meet and Greet. And Google does not allow her to put it on another--the one that's probably most likely to be dropped in on--Win a Book. So. Saturday Spotlight: The Adventures of Princess and Mr. Whiffle: The Thing Beneath the Bed by Patrick Rothfuss...

Today, I have the pleasure of sharing one of my favorite authors with you. Not only does his debut fantasy epic have a whole slew of fans waiting on tenderhooks for the sequel, he's also wickedly funny, and a fellow Wisconsinite!

This is not a book for children.

It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.

There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.

The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.

Simply said: This is not a book for children.

And this is so not a book for children that Patrick Rothfuss has a post about it: Protecting Our Nation's Youth. You'll have to get about halfway down the page to get to the sticker that was designed as a warning that this is NOT for children...

Saturday Spotlight: Linger by Maggie Stiefvater...

Today's spotlight is on Linger by Maggie Stiefvater. I love the covers of both Shiver and Linger, and have the former on my wait list--I really need to move it up!

Saturday Spotlight: Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill...

I don't believe I've gushed enough about Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampires series. Nope, not enough. So. Today's spotlight is on book #3 in said series, and should be available in bookstores now, even though the official release date is July 6th.

Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit, Chicago's newest vampire. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene-and to spy for the vamps while she's at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan's offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Unfortunately, someone is gunning for Gabriel, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She'll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals-not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries-old master vampire.

Saturday Spotlight: Kitty Goes to War by Carrie Vaughn...

I guess I skipped a week... Sorry!! But this week's spotlight is on a book I can't wait to get my hands on. I love, love, love Kitty. This one comes out June 29.

Saturday Spotlight: Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris...

It's Saturday already?? Wow, where did my week go? Today's spotlight is on book #10 in Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series. I've inhaled this series, and cannot wait to read #10. I haven't, just because, well, there are so many books in my TBR pile already... But it's on my wishlist! *wink*

After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she's angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he's under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry...

Hmm Sookie... What did you get into this time? I've read mixed reviews about this one, but will give it a whirl anyway. If only because I think there's more Eric here... *grin*
