drey's library hosts (85.) The Host (by Stephenie Meyer)!!

June 5, 2009
the host badge
I'm so excited to be a part of the tour for Stephenie Meyer's The Host!! Welcome!!

About the book:
Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

One of the most compelling writers of our time, Stephenie Meyer brings us a riveting and unforgettable novel about the persistence of love and the very essence of what it means to be human.

stephenie meyerAbout the author:
Stephenie Meyer's life changed dramatically on June 2, 2003. The stay-at-home mother of three young sons woke-up from a dream featuring seemingly real characters that she could not get out of her head.

Meyer invented the plot during the day through swim lessons and potty training, then writing it out late at night when the house was quiet. Three months later she finished her first novel, Twilight. With encouragement from her older sister (the only other person who knew she had written a book), Meyer submitted her manuscript to various literary agencies. Twilight was picked out of a slush pile at Writer's House and eventually made its way to Little, Brown where everyone fell immediately in love with the gripping, star-crossed lovers theme.

Twilight was one of 2005's most talked about novels and within weeks of its release the book debuted at #5 on The New York Times bestseller list. The highly-anticipated sequel, New Moon, was released in September 2006 and has spent more than 25 weeks at the #1 position on The New York Times bestseller list. In 2007, Eclipse landed literally around the world and fans made the Twilight Saga a worldwide phenomenon! With midnight parties, vampire-themed proms and more the enthusiasm for the series continues to grow.

On May 6, 2008, Little, Brown and Company released The Host, Meyer's highly-anticipated debut for novel adults which debuted at #1 on The New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. The Host still remains a staple on the bestseller lists a year after its debut.

On August 2, 2008, the final book in the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn was released at 12:01 midnight. The Twilight movie, directed by Catherine Hardwicke and starting Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, was released on November 21, 2008. Twilight debuted at #1 at the box office with $70 million, making it the highest debut for a female director.

Stephenie lives in Arizona with her husband and three sons.  For more about Stephenie, check out the "unofficial bio" on her website, StephenieMeyer.com.

drey's review:
If you've been here since January, you'll know that I've read & reviewed all 4 Twilight books. I signed up for this tour on a lark--I wasn't enthralled with Twilight, and its whiny-angsty heroine, Bella, and thought I'd give The Host a chance for Meyer to show that she could write a 'better" heroine...

And, in my opinion, she did. (I consider Wanderer to be the heroine here, as Melanie's--to me--just a voice in her head...) I confess, I didn't know much about The Host prior to reading it. But the thought of an invading alien species burrowing into my brain doesn't really sound appealing. Until you read The Host, that is... Somehow Meyer's altruistic, do-anything-for-you alien isn't so bad. Except for maybe just a tad too much of the do-anything-for-you thing, which started getting annoying, as it did with Bella... But Wanderer didn't have all that whiny-angsty drama-queen tendency like Bella did, which probably assisted in my reading enjoyment. I can see why The Host has been at the top of the bestseller lists.

Fun stuff!

Please count me in the contest.

I read the Twilight series and did enjoy it - I didn't read much YA and though I'd skim through the parts when Bella and Edward were a bit much, I liked Jacob and how he was so loyal!

I'd like to read the Host on the strength of how much I found I enjoyed the Twilight series. And your very positive review has helped as well.

Thanks!

I haven't read the Twilight series. I've been seeing so much about it (how could I not!) & may consider reading the series in the future.

As for "The Host", it seems to be a good sci-fi book. This would hold my interest a little more than a vampire book.

Thanks for the review - Please count me in!

I read Twilight because I heard that all the kids were reading it and their parents were pre-reading it and loved it as well! So I started reading the first book, within a couple of weeks, I had read all four! Then I had to see the movie and can't wait to see the next one!
An 8th grader recommended The Host to me and told me it was even better than Twilight! So now I can't wait to read that one.

I liked the series, but it wasn't fantastic - I thought the writing needed a lot of work. I'd like to see how she does on the adult series - maybe my language problem is from the fact that it's a YA series at heart.

Didn't love the Twilight books. Thought Breaking Dawn was the best of the bunch, actually. Borrowed The Host from the library and really liked it. Finally, some depth, which was sorely lacking in the Twilight series.

I'd love my own copy, as this is one I'd actually read again. I probably won't reread Twilight.
