Tour & Giveaway: 109. The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand...

July 8, 2009
Today's tour is for Elin Hilderbrand's The Castaways...

About the book:
Greg and Tess MacAvoy are one of four prominent Nantucket couples who count each other as best friends. As pillars of their close-knit community, the MacAvoys, Kapenashes, Drakes, and Wheelers are important to their friends and neighbors, and especially to each other. But just before the beginning of another idyllic summer, Greg and Tess are killed when their boat capsizes during an anniversary sail. As the warm weather approaches and the island mourns their loss, nothing can prepare the MacAvoy's closest friends for what will be revealed.

Once again, Hilderbrand masterfully weaves an intense tale of love and loyalty set against the backdrop of endless summer island life.
elin hilderbrandAbout the author:
Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket with her husband and their three young children. She grew up in Collegeville, PA, and traveled extensively before settling on Nantucket, which has been the setting for her seven previous novels. Hilderbrand is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the graduate fiction workshop at the University of Iowa. She can be found online at elinhilderbrand.net.

drey's thoughts:
Who knew that dying would cause so much confusion? Consternation? Guilt? Pain--well, that's given. In any case, Greg & Tess MacAvoy's deaths while sailing to celebrate their 12th anniversary, definitely opens up a can of worms for their close-knit group of friends. Everyone has secrets. Everyone has regrets. Some more than others. Without giving the whole story away, The Castaways was a well-written and engrossing look into the lives of this close-knit group of friends, and how they deal with the loss of two of their own. Along the way, hidden secrets reluctantly come to light, and forgiveness lets the living carry on.

Loved the book. Now I'm wishing I'd signed up for some of the giveaways of Elin's A Summer Affair! =)

Fun stuff!

This sounds like a great read and a good explanation of why I think secluded places are best left for vacationing!

My husband and I always talked about moving to a vacation community on the ocean, and opening up a breakfast/lunch diner, with a used bookstore. Spend our mornings and early afternoons working, then off to the beach. We may do this when we retire. :)

Being from a smaller city myself, I don't think I could live anywhere smaller. Although it is nice to think that it would be great to live somewhere where you know everyone, that's the downfall as well. Everyone knows everyone's secrets, etc. So I think islands are great to visit but unless we're talking New York or Singapore (where I have lived), I don't want to live on one.

After living in a big city we decided to move to a small rural town not unlike the towns be both grew up in. We are close enough to the city for the resterauntes, entertainment and shopping.

I live in a small type community now, and come from a community a little bit bigger than this one. There is some "back-biting" that can go on, and clicques, plus since some in this community are a little bit more well-off, and they look down on those of us who are struggling.

I adore Nantucket and would definitely love to try living there! I grew up in the suburbs but have lived in a BIG city for a decade and, although there's much about it that I love, it's also stressful and not very relaxing. My only hesitation about living in a place like Nantucket full-time is that it's an island so you can't take a long drive if you need to or visit a long-distance friend without a plane ride or a long ferry ride. Still....lol

I am a city girl too, and my husband and I bought a lot on a small island about 10 years ago thinking we would retire there. Every year we would rent a place on the island to get used to it and see how we liked it. Well, we loved visiting, but decided we couldn't live there full time and sold the lot.

In some ways I would love to sneak away to a deserted Island but in reality I know that if I was really that isolated I would really miss modern conviences like the internet. It would be nice for a day or two but after that I think I would go nuts.

I think I could adjust to island life quite well, as long as it was a moderate climate. I'm a bit of a loner so as long as I had plenty to read I'd be happy. I considered retiring to Hawaii but the prices there are so high that I couldn't afford to! :)

I love small town living and enjoy the fact that I live in a small, close-knit community. But, I also live near a larger city and not too far from the beach and islands too. So, I love small towns and islands, as long as they aren't too far away from a city's conveniences such as shopping and restaurants!
