Earth Day giveaway...

April 1, 2009

Here's another April giveaway from the folks at Hachette - this one's for Earth Day. Again, there are 5 sets up for grabs. The books are:
  1. Harvest for Hope by Jane Goodall, Gary McAvoy, Gail Hudson
  2. The Rural Life by Verlyn Klinkenborg
  3. Is it Just Me or is Everything Shit? by Steve Lowe, Alan McArthur, Brendan Hay
  4. Starbucked by Taylor Clark
  5. Garbage Land by Elizabeth Royte
  6. The Gift of Nothing by Patrick McDonnell

This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canada residents only. No P.O. Boxes, please. Enter by April 30th (you've got all month).

There are 5 sets to be had - & that's of ALL 6 books. I'm going to do this giveaway just like my other April giveaway. I'm going to assume that there are at least 10 of you entering, and start with one set. Another set will be added to the pot for the next 10 people entered (i.e. 1-10 people = 1 set, 11-20 = 2 sets, etc.).

To enter, leave a comment - what, if anything, do you do to help save the Earth? (A good way to learn more about Earth Day is by taking an online class...)

Followers get an extra entry. Sharing gets two extra entries. So tweet this, blog this, blast it to all your facebook friends... +2 for every share. Be sure to come back & let me know what/where.

And come back in May to find out if there's a package ready to head your way. You'll have 3 days to let me know where that package is going. =) Good luck!!

We have been rabid recyclers for years! Probably longer than you have been alive! My father-in- law got us into recycling newspapers, glass, tin or aluminum cans back in the late 60's. It is still a habit. Even when my grandchildren were little they knew they should take care of the earth. One day my daughter was reading a biblical story to them and my grandson asked why God did such and such so my daughter told him because people had done some bad things. His 3 year old reply was " like hitting or pinching"? ( his idea of bad) and my 7 year old granddaughter just looked like that's not bad but maybe they were, gasp,. . . . ..littering? Aha, the ultimate sin! They learned at an early age from their mother's knee. Sniff, sigh, I am so proud of them! Sorry for the long windedness, we old people get like that sometime. Please enter me in the contest. florida982002[at]yahoo[dot] com

I'd love to win this package of books. Here's a few things we do: compost, recycle, buy in bulk rather than all those little packages, use reuseable shopping bags, wash laundry in cold water, turn off unnecessary lights, use a 'set-back' thermostat. In addition, we try to buy stuff produced locally. We are moving soon and plan to collect rain water at the new house.

I follow your blog via Blogger's follow function.

Thanks for hosting this awesome giveaway.

We try to be "earth friendly" every day! We have the new lightbulbs, we turn off lights when we don't need them on, we wash our clothes in cold water, we walk when we can, we use reuseable bags for all purchases (when we don't forget them in the car haha), we recycle every bit of paper, plastic and metal that can be recycled, we rarely turn on our heat. We are going to be going over to my parents and planting a garden for them and we try to buy local produce and meats.

Well, I do lots of things to help the earth (she says with a self-congratulatory pat on the back), but the using of cloth diapers allows me to feel the most smug. I know,I know--there are two schools of thought on this...blah blah blah..but I am positive that this is the way to go...I have three kids currently in diapers, and I use ONLY cloth, as well as old rags for "wipes". I wash them only with cold water and eco-friendly detergent, and for those inclined to say "oooh, gross", let me just say that my kids have never had a diaper rash-HA!

we do many things to help heal the earth like using energy efficient bulbs, carrying our own reusable shopping bags, buying local produce/products wherever possible and electing to walk instead of drive whenever we can... but our biggest input was when we moved into our current house, we had a geothermal heat pump installed. geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly. now we're looking at switching to an eco-friendly tankless water heater...a friend has one and its amazing. oh and we also have energy star appliances.

Whenever I get a bottled beverage from the local pizza parlor that I almost always walk to, I carry the empty bottle out the door to where the recycling can is, and dispose of it there rather than inside where it would have no chance of being recycled. i have also taught my cub scout troop what is recyclable or not by taking them for a walk around the neighborhood, using gloves, and separating trash from recyclables. I even recycle the plastic milk rings and orange juice pop offs! I make my son use recycled paper for thank you notes & use recycled paper for several projects at my school.

Working in a retail environment, I always encourage my customers to use paper bags rather than plastic. I take my family's recycling to the recycling center whenever it fills up (usually once a month). We have two compost piles and a huge garden full of tomatoes, basil, blueberries, cotton, corn, peppers, onions, plenty of other foodages and lots of beautiful flowers. I'm hoping that everyone can pay extra special attention to this year's Earth Day because we're currently failing our survival test to see whether our species should be allowed to stay on our planet or not. And if we don't get our act together we really deserve nothing less than getting voted off the planet. So Drey, this month I continued following you in my RSS reader, blogged about both of your giveaways, and tweeted and facebooked them as well. We recycle everything possible and my husband takes it to a recycling center, have our own compost pile, grow our own veggies & fruit, make my own bread & feed the animals with the leftovers. I do the wash in cold water and hang the clothes to dry them. I only do full loads of wash and run the dishwasher when it's completely full. I stopped driving a few years back, so one less car on the road. We feed all sorts of critters and our property is a certified NWF habitat. We turn off lights that we're not using and keep the thermostat as low as possible without freezing the pipes. I'm sure I could think of more but that's all for now. Thank you for the chance to win!
