2011 New Authors Challenge...

December 29, 2010
This one's hosted by Jackie over at Literary Escapism, and I don't know why I didn't participate in 2010. Oh well, there's always next year--which starts in 3 days!!!

As always, there are rules (these are from Jackie, so "I" is her, not me!):
  1. The challenge will run from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011.
  2. Since this is an author challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors must be new to you and, preferably from novels. Anthologies are a great way to try someone new, but only a third of your new authors can be from anthologies.
  3. I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 new authors. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be. For me, I’m trying another 50 new authors. If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any new author you try can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your new experience.
  4. After reading your new author, write your review and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author, but adding the title is completely up to you.
  5. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome.

Doesn't sound too difficult, does it? And I already have a few authors to start with (*blush*), namely those I haven't finished reading from 2010... Anyway. I'm signing up for 15 new authors 25 new authors (since I just threw together the shell of my 2011 books list and most of the authors so far are new-to-me). So... Authors: If you're out there, and you find this post, and you're not listed on my reviews tab, feel free to holler at me and say "read my book(s)!!"... *grin*

You're all welcome to join me in this challenge, I'm sure it'll be fun, and (of course!) the more the merrier!

2011 Challenge: Full Steampunk Ahead!!

It's time to start thinking about what challenges I'd like to participate in for 2011... I saw this one at Book ♥ Soulmates and thought "hmm... I've got a few books on my want-to-read list that qualify, so why not?" Now I hope I can finish this! *grin* Steampunk's relatively new on the list of genres that I read, maybe it'll be a new favorite?

The Rules:
  • Challenge STARTS January 1, 2011 and ENDS December 31, 2011
  • Sign up by filling your info in the Mr. Linky at Book ♥ Soulmates.
  • Read at least 10 Steampunk books this year. Remember, the more the merrier!
  • The books can be print, ebooks, and audio books.
  • Reread books ARE allowed, BUT, the review must be rewritten. You cannot use old reviews.
  • Challenges are open to non-bloggers. A review must be written and posted on a literary site, such as GoodReads, Amazon, etc.
  • Grab a button to show your Challenge spirit!
  • Lastly, have fun reading!

Won't you come and join me in this? :)

2010 Summary...

December 11, 2010
Can you believe 2010 is almost over? I can't. Maybe I'm just in denial? Hmm... I'm going to ignore that for now. *grin*

Year 2 of blogging about books has worked out alright, I think. I'm loving my monthly Featured Authors spotlight, and I appreciate all the authors who've taken the time to come and hang out with us. If you missed them, there's a compilation list here. For 2011, I'll continue this feature, and will re-work the interview questions so you're not completely bored out of your mind!

I did read less this year than in 2009, which is a reflection of my other priorities in life (or, as I sometimes like to refer to them, the reading-interruptions in life). I still made the 100 that I signed up for, so that's one challenge completed! And since 69 of 'em were published this year, that's another challenge completed! However, I only read 39 books from my local library, so that's a big fail. :( I also bought a ton of books. Shhhh! Don't tell the Mr.! Having a nook has made it way too easy to buy books. Maybe what I need to do for 2011 is a modified Ban on Spending Challenge? *sigh*

I still have Mt. TBR to conquer. And silly me, I keep adding to the pile. What am I doing?? I'm thinking of starting 2011 with a pledge to only read books that I've already committed to (including some ARCs that are coming soon). At least for the first quarter. What do you think? Do you have a Mt. TBR? How do you plan to conquer yours?

And I've started seeing these around, so I thought I'd share my favorite books of 2010. These are not ranked. Apparently I read quite a few books that are part of a series, so I'm listing the series too.

Single books:
1. The Lace Makers of Glenmara by Heather Barbieri
2. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
3. Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson
4. Twice Bitten by Chloe Neill
5. Changes by Jim Butcher
6. Songs of Love and Death edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois
7. The Reapers are the Angels by Alden Bell

Series:
1. Jane Yellowrock by Faith Hunter
2. Elemental Assassins by Jennifer Estep (read Spider's Bite in 2009)
3. Shifters by Rachel Vincent
4. Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane
5. Dreg City by Kelly Meding (review coming for As Lie the Dead)

What changes would you like to see for 2011? Share them here, I'm open to any and all ideas! While I'm thinking about this, maybe I should do a survey--what works for you, what doesn't, what you'd like more of, less of, etc...

Ok, survey questions are in the form below. I'd appreciate your filling it out!

I'd like to thank every one of you for stopping by and reading my blog. I appreciate that you spend precious minutes here, and I hope I deserve your attention. Have a great 2011!

2010 Pub Challenge!

January 2, 2010
2010 pub challenge

Ok! Ok! I can't help it... I have to join this one, too. I blame this on Marg--I saw her post on Reading Adventures, and had to head on over to see...

Here are the 2010 rules:
  1. Read a minimum of 10 books first published in 2010. You don’t have to buy these. Library books, unabridged audios, or ARCs are all acceptable. To qualify as being first published in 2010, it must be the first time that the book is published in your own country. For example, if a book was published in Australia, England, or Canada in 2009, and then published in the USA in 2010, it counts (if you live in the USA). Newly published trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks do not count if there has been a hardcover/trade published before 2010.

  2. No children’s/YA titles allowed, since we’re at the ‘pub.’

  3. At least 5 titles must be fiction.

  4. Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.

  5. You can add your titles as you go, and they may be changed at any time.

  6. Sign up at the Pub Challenge site using Mr. Linky.

  7. Have fun reading your 2010 books!

Ok. So... C'mon and join in! Here's my list:
  1. Getting Lucky by Carolyn Brown
  2. Kitty's House of Horrors by Carrie Vaughn

2010 Challenges...

January 1, 2010
All of the challenges I'm participating in, in one location. There are not as many as there were for 2009, but I'm ok with it. And I'm not saying I won't sign up for more during the year, either. =)

2010 100+ Challenge

2010 Support Your Local Library Challenge

2009 Summary

December 21, 2009
Well, the year is (almost) over, and it's been quite a ride. I celebrated my 1st anniversary of blogging about books on November 23rd, and I am very gratified that you have taken time out of your busy lives to come by and drop a note or two, enter my giveaways, and generally let me know that I'm not just out here shouting into the wind. Thank you. Come back in 2010, and let's see what trouble we can cook up together... *grin*

Books read in 2009 Boy, I cannot believe how many books I've read this year. Tons! Way more than I'd expected to. And I still have Mount TBR to conquer...

2009 favorites...

Ban on Spending Challenge Alas, I didn't do so well on the Ban on Spending Challenge. Well, ok, so I didn't spend anything, but I didn't finish my TBR either. So... does that make it a draw? Anyway, if someone wants to host this for 2010, feel free! Let me know so I can route people your way. =)

I did complete the following challenges, though, and had a blast with my reading. How did you do in 2009?

2010 Support Your Local Library Challenge...

December 16, 2009

Another 2010 challenge! This one is the 2010 Support Your Local Library Challenge hosted by the challenge hostess extraordinaire, J.Kaye. And since I love my local library, how could I not participate?

Rules:
1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.
--Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post. To learn how to sign up without having a blog, click here.

2. There are four levels:
--The Mini – Check out and read 25 library books.
--Just My Size – Check out and read 50 library books.
--Stepping It Up – Check out and read 75 library books.
--Super Size Me – Check out and read 100 library books.
(Aim high. As long as you read 25 by the end of 2010, you are a winner.)

3. Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Young Reader – any book as long as it is checked out from the library count. Checked out like with a library card, not purchased at a library sale.

4. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

5. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

6. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2010.
This year I'm at 75 library books and counting, which blows away the 25 I signed up for... So for 2010 I'm going to try & Step It Up and check out another 75. I think I should be able to do that!

Come and join me--Sign up for the 2010 Support Your Local Library Challenge! The more the merrier!!

2010 100+ Challenge...

Yes, it's that time of year again... Preparing for next year's reading challenges! The first one I'm signing up for is the 2010 100+ Challenge hosted by J.Kaye.

Rules:
1. The goal is to read 100 or more books. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.

--Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post. Click link to sign up without having a blog.

2. Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Library books, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.

3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

5. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2010. Books started before the 1st do not count.
This year I'm at 200 books and counting... I might actually hit 250! Next year, I'm aiming for 3 books a week X 52 weeks = 156 books. I will probably go way over, but hey, a girl's gotta start somewhere, right?

Come and join me--Sign up for the 2010 100+ Reading Challenge! The more the merrier!!

Another day, another challenge...

August 31, 2009
stephanie plum challenge
*sigh* Blame this one on J.Kaye, too, will ya? I can't seem to help myself... =P So. I am now participating in J.Kaye's Stephanie Plum challenge.

Details:
  1. The goal is to get caught up on the Stephanie Plum series, so create a list of the books you haven't read yet. You have between now and December 31, 2010. Don't include books you've read prior to or started before 7/23/09.

  2. This reading challenge is for participants with a blog. If you decide to participate in the 2009/2010 Stephanie Plum Reading Challenge, create a post on your blog telling others about this event. In your post, be sure to include the link to this post on your blog. That way others can find their way here and join in the fun.

  3. If you want to have your reading list on your blog's right sidebar, then please include a link to this post.

  4. Audio and eBooks count.

  5. You can join anytime between now and the later part of next year.

  6. When you sign up under Mr. Linky, list the direct link to your post where your books will be listed. If you list just your blog’s URL, it will be removed. If you don’t have a blog, leave the URL blank.

  7. Books to be published after signing up do not have to be listed. This is optional.

  8. There will be a place for you to link your reviews, but this is optional.

  9. When you have completed your number of the Stephanie Plum books, link your completed list to the completed page. One will be set up.

  10. If you have any questions, feel free to ask below or email J.Kaye at jkayeoldner@yahoo.com. Comments usually get a quicker response.

It shouldn't be too hard, though. I think the only Plum book I haven't read yet is Finger Lickin' Fifteen, and it's already on my bookshelf... *grin* I need an easy one!!

Wanna join me? Go to J.Kaye's Stephanie Plum Challenge page to sign up!

2009 Support Your Local Library Challenge update!

April 10, 2009
Yup. This one's done too. =D After the January I had, I was done with this back in February. February 5th, actually. I should've committed to way more than 25 books. But since that's all I officially signed on for, I'm "officially" done. I'll keep on going though. My Ban on Spending Challenge is still a pain in the rear, so if I want to read new books that I'm not winning somewhere else, I'll have to lug myself to the good ol' library to see if they'll get it for me. =D

My next goal is 50, which is 16 books away, but I've been slowing down a little on my library loot... In any case, I'll keep updating my list.

2009 Pub Challenge update! Another one bites the dust...

Ok, it's about time I did this... The 2009 Pub Challenge is o'er and done. I needed to read 9 books. I've got 14 under my belt already, and almost another dozen to read yet. I'll keep on reading, though. Can't seem to help that... =)

I'll keep updating my list - here... But for "official" purposes, by George I did it! =D

2009 Vampire Challenge...

January 26, 2009
I really, really, REALLY have to stop popping in at J.Kaye's Book Blog. Because whenever I do, like today, I find yet another challenge that I want to participate in. Why? Who knows? Maybe because with this one, I'm already 50% done? =P Anyway, the 2009 Vampire Challenge is hosted by Kathrin at It's All About Books.

Details:
What? For the Vampire Challenge you will read books with vampires - romance, YA, paranormal, mysteries - anything, as long as there's a or two (or more) vampire in it.

When? The challenge will start January 1, 2009 and end December 31, 2009.

How? The goal is to read 2+ books with vampires in 2009, that's it. It's fairly easy, I think. For some inspiration check out my post on vampires in books.

2009 Ban on Spending Challenge...

December 31, 2008
J.Kaye put out an S.O.S. for someone to run this challenge for 2009. I nuttily volunteered. Mostly because I agreed with the spirit of the challenge. I spend way too much on books. Authors, publishers, and retailers probably love me for it, but my budget needs some control. Ok, LOTS of control. And since I now wield (& use!) a library card, I can try to put some parameters around buying books.

So, without further ado, here's my rules for the 2009 Ban on Spending Challenge:
  1. List all the books on your TBR list. Every single one.
  2. No purchasing books for yourself until all the books listed are gone. No purchasing books for other people with the intention of reading them after they are finished. Library or other borrowed books can’t be listed.
  3. Any books won in a raffle or given to you as a gift will be added to this list.
  4. Books to be reviewed for promo companies, other blogs, authors, etc. do not count and are not added to this list.
  5. Challenge runs January 1st to December 31st, 2009. Start anytime and list as many or as few books as you have. Once all books are checked off from the list, the ban is lifted and the spending can begin again.
  6. If you don't have a ton of books to list, but would still like to participate in the spirit of the challenge, you may elect to participate in a period of "abstinence" ~ e.g. no buying from January through April. Make sure to state your intent & the period of time you're abstaining for.
  7. I MAY have a prize at the end of the year, I'll have to think of the qualifications (most books waded thru? longest wait? random?).
  8. If you don't have a blog and would like to still join, list your books in the comment section below.
  9. Any questions? Post a comment, & I'll figure it out. =)
  10. Have FUN!
I think if I can do this well, I might be able to save enough for a Kindle... That's a HUGE incentive for me! =) My list.

2009 Support Your Local Library Challenge...

December 14, 2008
Ok, here's another challenge I'm signing up for. I didn't earlier, because with 2009 being my first year for challenges, I didn't want to get overwhelmed. However, if I keep picking up batches of 6-10 books every time I head over to the library, I might as well participate in J.Kaye's challenge, since she's putting in the time to host it. =)

Challenge rules:
  1. There are 3 sizes of challenges. Pick one and get going. The options are to read 12, 25, or 50 books from your local library.
