Calling poetry lovers! National Poetry Month giveaway...

April 1, 2009
I have to admit, I'm not much of a poetry reader. I think it's because I'm a little intimidated by the process of interpretation that poetry can involve. With novels, I know exactly what a writer is trying to say. Who knows, maybe this will be the year that I pick up poetry. =)

Anyhoo. Some of you may know this. Some of you may not. But, apparently April is National Poetry Month. And, thanks to the folks at Hachette Book Group, I have the following set up for grabs. Check these out:
  1. 100 Best Poems of All Time by Leslie Pockell
  2. The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson
  3. The Poets' Corner by John Lithgow
  4. Odes to Common Things by Pablo Neruda, Ken Krabbenhoft, Ferris Cook
  5. American Primitive by Mary Oliver
  6. Revolution on Canvas Vol. 1 by Rich Balling
This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canada residents only. No P.O. Boxes, please. Enter by April 30th (yup, lots of time to do it!).

There are 5 sets to be had - & that's of ALL 6 books. I'm going to do this giveaway a little differently (borrowing from another blog, & when I remember who it is, I'll update this with their blog name!), because I don't know how many poetry lovers there are amongst y'all... So. I'm going to assume that there are at least 10 of you, and start with one set. Another set will be added to the pot for the next 10 people entered (i.e. 1-10 people = 1 set, 11-20 = 2 sets, etc.). Hope that's cool with you. =)

To enter, leave a comment. Share a favorite poem if you'd like. =) Followers get an extra entry. Sharing gets two extra entries. So tweet this, blog this, blast it to all your facebook friends... +2 for every share. Be sure to come back & let me know what/where.

And come back in May to find out if there's a package ready to head your way. You'll have 3 days to let me know where that package is going. =) Good luck!!

I am also a little intimidated by poetry. Analyzing a poem for school can be sometimes frustrating, but I like to read poetry for fun.

Great contest! (The Emily Dickenson collecion is calling out my name.)

One of my favorite poems, actaully, is the one Laurie Halse Anderson wrote about the responses she got from readers for Speak. It really touched me.

I follow you.

Oh my gosh! LOVE poetry. I had a great Contemporary Lit professor who has forever changed me. I got my love of Shakespeare, Dickinson, and Sylvia Plath totally from her.

I like "Polly's Tree" by Sylvia Plath and LOVE "I Died For Beauty" by Emily Dickinson. It may be a bit cliched, but I like Robert Frost's poem that starts "two roads diverged in a wood" or something like that. That one is fantastic and has such a bittersweet sentiment. :)

I like poetry, but don't make a habit of reading it. My favorite poem that I carry with me & read often is "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann that begins "Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence...."

I'm not very good at poetry, even if two of my friends insist I am. I want to make sure my kids have at least a passing acquaintance with it, so we got them these poetry for kids books. They aren't dr suess or shel silverstein, though they have those. These are Emily Dickenson, Poe, Kipling, Frost, etc. They are poems that the kids can understand. they even have footnotes for some of the harder words.

I try to have as much poetry in the house. So please enter me.

My favorite poem is 'The Law of the Yukon' by Robert Service. You really should look it up if you haven't read it(http://www.mochinet.com/poets/service/index.cgi?ListTitles=The%20Spell%20of%20the%20Yukon%20and%20Other%20Verses&Poem=5). Up here in Alaska, we had no less than at least three units on his poetry within four years of schooling. He's studied a lot up here. Anyway, I memorized the entirety of the poem for one such unit in the 9th grade. It's simply brilliant. He has several good poems, but that one is the best of the lot.

I am a poetry fan and an amateur poet. Here's a poem add me for two entries + I follow you on blogger and Twitter.

Love to My Husband
I am drawn to you like

The stars to the midnight skies

The Earth to the burning sun

Water to thirsting flowers

I am comfortable with you like

An old pair of boots

A faded pair of jeans

My favorite sweater and scarf

I am at peace with you like

Sitting in a boat in the middle of a lake

Taking a walk in silence in the country

Listening to rain drops fall in the dark of night

I am alive with you like

The laughter that is uncontrollable

The heart that goes thump, thump, thump

Running through wildflowers in the wilderness

Every ounce of my being

Mind, body and soul are riveted by you

I am alive with you, free with you, comfortable with you

I love you

My husband was in the military, so I like the poem:

Long Distance Love
by Panda
When it hurts so bad,
why does it feel so good?
I wish this all made sense,
I wish I understood.
Not having you here with me is tearing me up inside,
but I can't stop thinking about you no matter how hard I try.

You know how I feel about you,
and I know I want to spend the rest of my life with you,
but it's so hard to do when I can't even be next to you.
Why does it gotta be so complicated?

Loving you feels so right,
but at the same time,
knowing I can't have you keeps me awake at night.
I just want this to be simple,
I just want you here with me,
to look into your eyes,
be held in your arms...then I'd truly be happy.

Right now this distance between us is out of our control,
but I'm still hoping one day soon,
I'll get what I'm wishing for.

Abou Ben Adam is my all time favorite poem. My Dad helped me learn it when I was about 9 and I recited it at his funeral many years later. I also love children's poetry especially by Shel Silverstein like The Snowball
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last nigh it ran away,

As far as poems go... some favorites include (aren't you glad you asked?):

Math Is Very Bad for Me
Written by my dad when he was in 5th grade

Math is very bad for me,
I look in my book and see,
Exercises, of all different sizes,
I feel sorry for me.

AND (I never wanted to be a writer, but I find this beautiful anyway)

Upon Buying Silver InkWritten by Aaron and Debbi Q. (TheQuintavallis on PBS)

I had always dreamed
Of becoming
A brilliant writer,
One who's pen
Spun silver spiderwebs
that no one dared
Brush away.

But my mind
Never saw
The pictures
That grow
Into beautiful words

And my pen
Wrote only
In blue ink.

AND (Inspiration for those times when I was writing dreaded papers for school)

Written by Sir Philip Sydney in Astrophel & Stella...Biting my truant pen, beating myself for spite: Fool! said my muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

AND

From The Stolen ChildWritten by W. B. Yeats

Come away! O, human child!
To the woods and waters wild,
With a fairy hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

I still remember the first poem I ever had to memorize for 5th grade (we had to memorize and recite a poem every week):

A road like brown ribbon
A sky that is blue
A forest of green
With the sky peeping through.
Asters, deep purple,
A grasshopper's call,
Today is summer,
Tomorrow is fall.

by Edwina Fallis
(I had to use Google to find out the name of the poem. I remember the poem and the author, but forgot the name of the poem is September).

I adore poetry and have been participating in the National Poetry Month Poem-a-day Challenge at Poetic Asides. Some of my favorite poems are from Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Emily Dickinson, Billy Collins, and Arlene Ang.

I'll leave you with this poem from Lawrence Ferlinghetti:

Dog

The dog trots freely in the street
and sees reality
and the things he sees
are bigger than himself
and the things he sees
are his reality
Drunks in doorways
Moons on trees
The dog trots freely thru the street
and the things he sees
are smaller than himself
Fish on newsprint
Ants in holes
Chickens in Chinatown windows
their heads a block away
The dog trots freely in the street
and the things he smells
smell something like himself
The dog trots freely in the street
past puddles and babies
cats and cigars
poolrooms and policemen
He doesn't hate cops
He merely has no use for them
and he goes past them
and past the dead cows hung up whole
in front of the San Francisco Meat Market
He would rather eat a tender cow
than a tough policeman
though either might do
And he goes past the Romeo Ravioli Factory
and past Coit's Tower
and past Congressman Doyle of the Unamerican Committee
He's afraid of Coit's Tower
but he's not afraid of Congressman Doyle
although what he hears is very discouraging
very depressing
very absurd
to a sad young dog like himself
to a serious dog like himself
But he has his own free world to live in
His own fleas to eat
He will not be muzzled
Congressman Doyle is just another
fire hydrant
to him
The dog trots freely in the street
and has his own dog's life to live
and to think about
and to reflect upon
touching and tasting and testing everything
investigating everything
without benefit of perjury
a real realist
with a real tale to tell
and a real tail to tell it with
a real live
barking
democratic dog
engaged in real
free enterprise
with something to say
about ontology
something to say
about reality
and how to see it
and how to hear it
with his head cocked sideways
at streetcorners
as if he is just about to have
his picture taken
for Victor Records
listening for
His Master's Voice
and looking
like a living questionmark
into the
great gramophone
of puzzling existence
with its wondrous hollow horn
which always seems
just about to spout forth
some Victorious answer
to everything
