Giveaway - A Lucky Child by Thomas Buergenthal...

April 1, 2009
Here's another great giveaway from Hachette. I can't wait to get my own copy to read & review. I guess you could say I'm a fan of all things Holocaust-related. It's such a dark period in the history of humanity that I believe ought to be remembered.

A Lucky Child is a memoir by Thomas Buergenthal, now a Judge in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, where he shares his astonishing experiences as a young boy. He arrived at Auschwitz at age 10 after surviving two ghettos and a labor camp. Separated first from his mother and then his father, Buergenthal managed by his wits and some remarkable strokes of luck to survive on his own. Almost two years after his liberation, Buergenthal was miraculously reunited with his mother and in 1951 arrived in the U.S. to start a new life.

Now dedicated to helping those subjected to tyranny throughout the world, Buergenthal writes his story with a simple clarity that highlights the stark details of unimaginable hardship. A LUCKY CHILD is a book that demands to be read by all.

Check out Thomas Buergenthal talking about his story in this video.

A Lucky Child will be available on April 20, but you lucky readers get to enter for your very own copy. Up to 5 of you lucky readers, actually...

Enter by 10:00 pm on April 12th, by telling me what else you've read that's Holocaust-related? Like, Anne Frank's Diary. Or Elie Wiesel's Night. US & Canada only, no P.O. Boxes (HBG rules). As usual, +1 for following, +2 for sharing, swing back & let me know!

I've also read The Diary of Anne Frank and the Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. Interesting, but so painful to read.

I've read the Diary of Anne Frank. I also have read other more obscure books over the years. In middle school I remember reading a book about a person hiding someone in a secret room behind a bookcase or bureau. I think it took place in Poland.

Heh. I'm Jewish. I know Holocaust stories that you've never heard of. Thomas Moran's Man in the Box (a brilliant coming-of-age tale that's also about secrets). Joseph Skibell's A Blessing on the Moon. And more. Aleksander Tisma's The Book of Blam.

I'll stop now, especially 'cause you know you don't need to enter me. I read a horribly brutal memoir last December and can't go near the Holocaust right now without getting sick. If you need the link to my blog post about it, holler.

Anyway... despite my teasing, I did post this at Win a Book. Of course!!!

Lots to choose from, but I'll recommend Uri Orlev's books (they're YA).

I read the Diary of Anne Frank plus numerous other books on the holocaust that aren't biographies...such brutality and horror but such amazing human strength. Thanks for the chance to enter.

I would love to read this book actually to add it to my library. I have numerous books about the holocaust and WWII. I actually have the big Encyclopedia of the Holocaust. The best book I think so far was Ettie Hillesum's book and the
saddest, most depresseing was Hilter's Henchmen.

Anne Frank, The Book Thief and The Hiding Places are some of the "normal" Holocaust reads I've enjoyed. I would also add Beach Music by Pat Conroy to the list since the Holocaust had such a major role in many of the characters' lives.

I've read a few books on the Holocaust. The one that stands out the most is Night by Elie Wiesel. I read it about six months ago. Definatley, one of my favorite books of all time.
